Driver education and training is the most important of the five components of implementing a fatigue management program. For commercial motor vehicle drivers, managing fatigue mainly means changing behavior. Research suggests that behavior change involves (1) becoming aware of the problem, (2) thinking about changing, (3) thinking becomes planning, (4) taking action and (5) sustaining action. Therefore, the first three steps to changing behavior require education and training.
